A Design Week favourite, HomeGrown returns for it’s 4th year. This year we will hear from Fiona McDonnell, Hannah Vail, Alice Kearney & Patricia McGinnis.
Fiona McDonnell is a freelancer Illustrator based in Belfast and a member of Belfast's first illustration agency UsFolk, where she also works part time as illustration agency manager. With a distinct and colourful style of work that is often accompanied by interesting commentary on social issues, people, politics, music and film, Fiona often uses her illustration practice to discuss and support the causes she cares about.
Fiona has worked with a wide variety of clients both local to Belfast and internationally, she was also recently the designer in residence at The Analog Research Lab in Facebook's Dublin headquarters. You can see more of her work here.
Han* was born in August 2017, the brainchild of Hannah Vail. A 2016 fashion and textiles graduate of Ulster University Belfast and resident designer in the Fashion and Textile Design Centre.
Han* is currently a concession within Topshop in Victoria Square, Belfast and Foyleside, Derry. Their focus is to create beautiful minimal pieces with embroidery or print developed from original and abstract illustrations, for all sexes.
Alice Kearney is a designer who blurs the traditional boundaries between design and illustration to breathe energy and creativity into every project. Alice works for the Belfast brand consultancy Mammoth and runs Ladies, Wine and Design Belfast.
Patricia co-owns Maven, just off Belfast’s Lisburn Road.
After graduation, Patricia spent 10 years in London working in event management. A role as tour manager for a record company specialising in jazz and world music enabled her to work with many Scandinavian musicians and so a great love of all things Nordic began. Patricia returned home to work in the family building company where she gained a sound knowledge of the technical aspects of the building industry.
This winding path led to the eventual creation of Maven, a shop and interior design practice which offers something truly different to the Northern Irish marketplace. It was the first shop to introduce many international brands such as Hay, Muuto, Gubi and Ferm Living to Northern Ireland. Maven also takes pride in stocking the very best of Irish talent as well, including makers such as Kathryn Davey, Derek Wilson Ceramics, Bricolage and Helen Faulkner.
