Design x Science / Visualising Science
This event that brings together designers and scientists to chat, discuss and collaborate. We’ve previously held talks and panel discussions, but in a brand new format for our 4th year, we are partnering with Farset Labs to bring you a more interactive event where we’ll be working in teams to investigate how to use design to understand science.
In this workshop we will work with scientists and designers to use some of the complex data generated during scientific research and use UX design and visuals to make it understandable to the wider public. We'll hear a bit about Astrophysics and UX Design from Professor Stephen Smartt from QUB and Andrew McCrea from Fathom who will be in conversation with David Kane from Farset Labs and Karishma Kusurkar from Belfast Design Week. Then we’ll get stuck into some designing.
This workshop will be fast-paced and interactive. No prior experience is required, simply come along and learn something new about science and/or design, meet new people and get stuck in!
Some information ahead of the event will be sent to participants to give context
Our panellists and mentors:
PROFESSOR STEPHEN SMARTT, Q.U.B. (ASTROPHYSICS)
Prof. Smartt is Director of the Astrophysics Research Centre in the School of Maths and Physics at Queen's University Belfast and an award-winning scientist known for his work on superluminous supernovae and the stars that produce them. He was awarded an Advanced Grant with the European Research Council grant from 2012-2017. As part of this project, he was at the helm of the Pan-STARRS Survey for Transients, which currently leads the world's supernova discoveries. His group works on supernovae and the deaths of massive stars. His team have leading roles in two large international projects to study supernovae and the transient Universe. His research has been widely published.
