FUTURE HERITAGE Exhibition Launch

At this year's Belfast Design Week, we are curating a dual graphic design and communication exhibition exploring the theme of Future Heritage by Central St. Martins student Indiya Tupe and Belfast School of Art graduate Alice Kearney.

This exhibition shares the perspectives of two designers from different places, backgrounds and perspectives. Whilst Indiya continues to study design, Alice has recently begun her career in design.

Indiya's exploration is of Deptford in London, its culture, multiculturalism and how it has developed and Alice will be exploring Belfast through its personality and its personalities.

We will be showcasing the exhibition in two parts. Part 1 will be released ahead of Design Week during the Open House Festival in October and the full exhibition with Part 2 will be available to view during Belfast Design Week.

Design Skills: Service Design

Service Design is one of the most disruptive disciplines now being used by charities, government, community organisations, businesses and even schools to provide human centred experiences that dissolve the problems of their users. The discipline's value is evident considering the world’s largest taxi company owns no cars and the largest accommodation business owns no property. The Design Thinking approach is not just proving successful for capitalist endeavours as solutions to sticky problems in remote areas of the world are also being solved with a completely different mindset, putting people’s needs first. Join us for this introduction to Service Design and learn from Glen's experience, his favourite stories, and be inspired to solve whatever problems you are facing with the Human Centred Design approach.

Glen is the Head of User Research and Product Experience at StepStone, UK, one of the largest e-Recruitment tools in the world. He is focused on understanding a variety of diverse user groups in order to collaborate with over 25 agile software development teams to build cutting edge solutions to the problems identified through spending time with people.

Our stylists have the opportunity to explore our stories and develop visuals, to carry this into the sales and business side of design. We work together as a team, helping each other like a dysfunctional fashion house. We all have our own traits and perks and that’s a fundamental about being a part of Melt, it's that you have something to offer.

About the archive

The archive of acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Kubrick is the largest archive held at the Archives and Special Collections Centre and one of the most unique cultural collections from the latter half of the 20th Century.

Kubrick maintained a high degree of control over his work and often working from home, was able to hold onto materials and resources that were generated by his rigorous and detailed pre-production and production work. These unique materials offer an extraordinary insight into his creative processes and the times in which he worked.

The archive spans the entirety of Kubrick's career from his time as a photographer for Look Magazine to his final film Eyes Wide Shut. The main concentration is of records created during the development and making of his films. There is also material related to his unfinished projects particularly AI: Artificial Intelligence and Aryan Papers and records created posthumously relating to projects such as the creation of DVD and video re-releases, documentaries and books about Kubrick and his work.

The archive includes draft and completed scripts, research materials such as books, magazines and location photographs. It also holds set plans and production documents such as call sheets, shooting schedules, continuity reports and continuity Polaroids. Props, costumes, poster designs, sound tapes and records also feature, alongside publicity press cuttings.

Design Thinking

Join us for Design Thinking at ArtsEkta, Northern Ireland's leading intercultural arts organisation situated in the heart of Belfast city centre.

The theme of our 2017 Design Thinking workshop is creating products and services to solve problems that refugees and asylum seekers living in Northern Ireland face. In teams we will begin by discovering the main issues faced; generate ideas and quickly prototype possible solutions. We will end the session with a 'Show & Tell' and feedback.

The aim of this year's Design Thinking is to leave with the first stage of prototypes for products and services that could potentially be taken forward to develop over the next year and showcase at Belfast Design Week 2018.  We are keen to involve refugees and asylum seekers in the conversation + workshop and will be inviting them to participate.

Are you up for the Challenge?

Join us at #BDW17

You don't have to be a designer to participate, this event is open to design enthusiasts and anyone that would like to contribute thoughts and ideas on this issue.
