The Design Economy is Design Council's groundbreaking research into the scale of the economic impact of design. It shows that the design economy generated £85.2 billion for the UK economy in 2016. This is equivalent to 73% of the value generated by the UK financial services and insurance industry. In Northern Ireland, there were 1,175 design firms and 31,900 people employed in design roles in 2017 and 2016 respectively.
For our next edition - to be published in 2021 - we want to understand what designers need to make the case for design, and what research questions about design’s impact should we be aiming to answer. For example, how might we collectively capture the social, environmental and cultural impact of design? This invite-only session will invite designers from across the design economy, from graphic designers to fashion designers to service designers, and share how we currently capture the value of design, and then ask what do you need to show the value of design.
Design Council champions the power of design to tackle the biggest challenges of our time and bring about real, positive change in people’s lives.
