The pop up design museum series brings the work of designers to the general public through “popping up” in unconventional spaces including outdoor walls, cafes, shops and hotels. We believe in making design education accessible and fun as well as celebrating the creative industries here in Northern Ireland.

Why sustainability?

Our 3rd pop up design museum is themed on “sustainability” as part of RE[act] Festival but it is also something we have been trying to incorporate more and more into how we run our festivals and events. We’re aware that sustainability can have different meanings to different people and that’s exactly what we would like to share - 5 different perspectives on sustainability from the local design sector.

We want you to get to know the designers and how their creative thinking has led to them coming up with more sustainable solutions that integrate with broader environmental and social systems and care for people, places and the planet.

Selecting the 2024 designers

We have selected designers across Graphic Design, Textile Design, Interaction Design, Product Design & Community Design tying into our ethos of being a multidisciplinary design organisation.

We chose Stéphanie Heckman for her graphic recording that captures sustainability, HARU as a company championing ease of access for users to be sustainable, Lee Robb for her role designing community projects bespoke to Carrickfergus, Azhar Murtuza developing new more sustainable and ethical food products and Emily McIlwaine finding meaning in natural processes to develop woven textile design.

We hope that you - as our guest and visitor - are inspired by these different takes on sustainability and take away some ideas on how you could get started, even if it is on a small scale.

We would also love to hear from you if you have ideas, tips and resources you would like to share from your own personal experiences:
