Community Plant Library
The Belfast Community Plant Library is a collaborative initiative that connects people, place, plants and creativity. The idea originated from an impromptu meeting between One Bite Design Studio and Belfast Design Week in Hong Kong in 2024 where they bonded over their common values and vision for creating meaningful, plant-based community spaces. One Bite had created Community Plant Libraries in Hong Kong neighbourhoods, helping communities reconnect with nature, place and each other and we thought that Belfast deserved to participate in this fantastic project too.
To bring Community Plant Library to life, we are also collaborating with:
David Keys Sustainable Woodworking & the Green Re:Make collective - a community-led up-cycling and circular economy hub
Jilly Dougan - An “edible gardener,” Author of “Sow, Grow, Munch” and a Director of the Yellow Door, Portadown.
Thomas Bannon - a freelance illustrator represented by UsFolk Illustration Agency
Design Hothouse Residents Rachel Cowie and Beth Schmidt
Belfast Design Week and Blick Shared Studios teams
The Belfast Community Plant Library will pop up at Bankmore Square during Culture Night Belfast 2026 (Friday 18th September, 4pm onwards) and will feature an interactive design installation, workshops and of course, the plant library!
So… come along to learn more about plants, growing and to take, share and swap plants.
Everyone is welcome and no advance booking is required.
This event has been kindly funded by Belfast City Council’s Arts & Heritage Fund with venue support from the Linen BID.

Venue Accessibility information:
We are holding this event in a shared public outdoor space at Bankmore Square.
Transport
By Bus - Metro buses 7 and 8 have the closest stops to Bankmore Square
By Train/ Rural Bus - Grand Central Station is a roughly 10 minute walk to Bankmore Square
By car - There are lots of paid off-street spaces nearby, many of which are free from 6pm. There are public and private car parks nearby including Little Victoria Street car park at the end of Dublin Road.
Wheelchair access
The Bankmore Square site is undergoing development, but its surrounding area has flat footpaths and there are dropped pavements for access at the major junctions nearby.
Toilet facilities
As we are hosting a temporary event in a shared space, we do not have toilet facilities.
